Just in time for spring, our annual Ag-Restricted CDL Report is now available. This report provides a state-by-state summary of the requirements for the Farm-Related/Ag-Restricted (Seasonal) CDL. This year, we found that 24 out of 50 states offer this seasonal license.
While the federal government permits states to issue Restricted CDLs, participation is optional, leading to some confusion within the industry. This license is available exclusively to farm-related industries—including farm retail outlets, suppliers, agrichemical businesses, custom harvesters, and livestock feeders—for Class B or C vehicles. It’s a valuable tool during peak seasons.
A key update: As of September 27, 2022, a new regulation allows Restricted CDLs to be valid for up to 210 days per calendar year, an increase from the previous 180 days. However, states must update their own laws to reflect this change, so we strongly recommend checking with your state DMV for the current validity period before applying.
If you plan to use a Restricted CDL, remember that drivers must be part of a random drug testing pool and have the required Clearinghouse queries completed. To update your drivers’ license types with Asmark, go to Employee Management on the Launch Pad and click the Actions gear next to their name. This ensures you receive the proper guidance to keep your drivers compliant.
